I ordered two other nail grinders from Amazon before I found this one. Unlike the others, it works! I used this device straight out of the box to grind my dogs' nails at least three or four times before it required a charge. I don't know how long it took to charge because I plugged it in and went to bed. It was fully charged when I got up the next morning.*PROS: quiet on both settings and powerful even on the low setting.* It's surprisingly quiet--MUCH quieter than my husband's electric Wahl beard trimmer, for example--and it doesn't frighten any of my animals. I use it without the guard so I can get around the pads of their feet and between their toes more easily. We have five dogs that range from 12 lbs. to 45 lbs. and I've used it on all of them, even the blind ones. My Tibetan terrier HATES having her feet messed with and tries to set teeth in me, so I can only do one nail at a time with her right now, but it grinds quickly even on the lower setting, so she doesn't have to tolerate it for very long.NOTE: It is important to immobilize the nail you're grinding. If you simply touch this grinder to a nail, the nail will skip along the surface, which is painful and scary to the animal. I recommend holding the grinder still and maneuvering the nail against it until you get the nail ground down enough to round off the edges. Then hold the nail still and maneuver the grinder to get smooth edges.*CONS: Gets hot with use.* It does get hot to the touch after about 5-6 minutes of constant use, especially outside in Texas heat, so I either do one paw quickly and then let it cool before I start another one or I turn it off for a few seconds between nails. My pitbull mix has really hard nails that take a bit to grind down. She's chill so I just turn it off for a minute before I start another nail while she lies there looking pathetic. If you start getting past the pulp close to the quick and the grinder is too hot, they start to pull their paws away. I have not burnt or quicked any of them with this grinder. It's pretty foolproof. *PROS: Works on hard nails. Nearly impossible to quick a nail.**CONS: Will rip out hair (yours or theirs).* It will rip out a chunk of hair in a blink if you get it too close to their fur when they're wiggling around (Oops! Only happened once...) or if you are holding the device too close to your own hair. However, I love that I can round off the ends of their nails because they all like to stand up and stretch along my legs while I have shorts on. No more scratch marks! *PROS: Easily grinds down sharp edges.**CONS: Smells bad.* I've seen folks complain about the smell when you're grinding nails. It's true--it does stink. It smells like burning organic matter (like, hello?) and it leaves dust everywhere, including your clothing and anything near where you're grinding, like furniture or carpet. I don't grind with a mask on, but I do it outdoors and I wear glasses to keep the dust bits from flying into my eyes. I highly recommend keeping your mouth closed. That stuff is nasty if you inadvertently inhale it. Ask me how I know...but it's worth it to be able to groom nails without having to pay $20 a dog every time or risk quicking them with a nail trimmer.BOTTOM LINE: IT WORKS AND IT SAVES MONEY. I highly recommend this grinder. I might even start using it on my own nails...
